Tourography: Sonogasm live at The Mason Jar 2004-02-26

This would be Sonogasm's first full-length set, and by pure coincidence was the only time we were able to play the venerable Mason Jar venue.  Metal acts from Motley Crue to Dokken to Ratt to Jane's Addiction to Tool had all played The Jar in Phoenix in the decades previous, as thoroughly documented by memorabilia covering every wall, and it served for those bands as something of a milepost on the way to stardom.  It did not serve as such for Sonogasm, but then again, we weren't very good.

Owner emeritus Franco Gagliano finally gave up the ghost a few years after our show, and the Mason Jar was renovated, renamed, and reopened as a gay bar.

Our second show brought visible (well, audible) improvement, but we were still just getting our sea legs.  Watching the video clips of this show, I smile at some of the nice, tight runs and passionate unison sequences, but I cringe at Chuck's occasional off-timed drums, Jeff's occasional guitar errors, and especially at my own out-of-tune vocals.

This was our first show playing a cover song, and we never played a set of all originals again from that point on.

Tourography: Sonogasm live at the Vine Tavern 2004-02-08

[All the Tourography posts from before 2005 were written in late 2010 and early 2011 based on notes and recordings from those performances.  Tourography posts after 2005 were written contemporaneously.]

I co-founded the alt-metal group Sonogasm (there's a name that hasn't aged well) in 2003, and by early 2004, we were finally performing live.  I had played in cover bands years earlier, of course, so I had stage experience, but my musicianship was still quite raw.  Jeff Mink played guitars and this was his first live performance in front of anyone ever.  Chuck Prime was, like me, a veteran of the music dive club scene, except that he had seen reasonable local success in the late 1980s in originals groups.

This was an open-mic night show, and we learned only mid-show that there was a 15-minute time limit.  To put it charitably, we were not ready for prime time at this point.
